MIAO Xu has helped move our message board to a new place with better technology: a blog. You can get access to the XYZ Blog through our main page:

It is much easier to maintain.
MIAO Xu indicates that everybody with a Gmail account can post messages to the Blog. But I could not figure out how to do it. It appears that we can only add comments to a posting.

I am deeply saddened to hear the news. As students of Prof. Tang, we all share this grief. It is undisputable that Prof. Tang has great impacts on all our lives. As many of you have stated, he has not only helped shaping our career, defining our philosophy in life, but also helped giving us a sense of well being. His great pursuit in science, his consistency in integrity, his profound love for his students and his family are among many things to be remembered and to be cherished.
I hope we can stay as connected as we once were. This will be a great way to remember and celebrate Prof. Tang’s life.

In memory of Prof Tang, I scanned this xyz-group picture (attached) takenin Spring 1993. Seeing this picture brings back a lot of memories aboutProf Tang and people in the XYZ group.
I did my undergraduate thesis under Prof Tang between 1992 and 1993. Itwas a real honor to be able to study under such a great scholar. Hisphilosophy, knowledge, and attitude towards excellence have had a greatinfluence on my own career. Ever since I came to US, going back to visitProf Tang has always been on my wishing list. I feel very sorry when Iheard this sad news.

--悼念恩师桃蹊先生

不年前，学生仁蔚初到北京，乳嗅未干，须毛无几，实为一个乡村野蛮之小童。蒙先生不弃收留，开我眼界，施我雨露，传我文理，塑我人生，还送小童留学西洋。今先生抛我仙逝，小童悲天哭地，不能万一。恨小童才情有限，难表先生悠悠长江之功德，更难感谢人生再造东海之恩情。心痛，心痛！
先生早年毕业于清华大学哲学系，先后在中国科学院数学所、计算所和软件所从事计算机科学和软件工程的研究工作，兼清华大学教授，并中国科学院院士。先生多次赴美欧日多国访问讲学，著述铺天盖地，弟子学生东西南北，并曾获国家杰出贡献大奖。先生开中国计算机科学和软件工程之先河，是海内外知名的计算机科学家、软件工程学家和逻辑学家。
先生，虽工于科学殿堂，但却横跨哲学、文学、历史。学界有个唐稚松，诗坛更有桃蹊红。先生也是一位横越世代的哲者和诗人。受先生之宠，亲赠小童诗词若干。小童不时翻读以增立身之本。每当读之，先生光辉如日，更显小童之浮躁和浅薄。“梦雨斜风何时休，匹夫何以醒神州？烟云十里长安道，春潮栽我万里舟”。先生的高远境界、风发意志从中可见一斑。
先生在海外时，身念故土，不贪富贵，爱我中华，归国效力。小童曾读过这样的句子：“幕云凝碧镜中流，雨外斜阳一角楼。醉眼纵能忘客意，瀛洲怎比我神州”？这尤其让我们身居海外的游子汗颜。
先生高风亮节、人品刚正、君子作为。当见到少数权贵交易的社会不正歪风时，先生悲愤疾书，曾叽道：“小人纷纭忙狗盗，权门交易尽民膏”。从中可看到，先生对那些歪风之鄙夷。
先生不仅忧国忧民，且夫妻情深，皆为小童等后辈之楷模。例之，先生与师母爱丁堡分别时，写有：“古城秋馆夜如年，灯暗街长雨接天。君正孤飞吾独卧，奈何都是不成眠”。当抵达美国时，留字：“回首重洋万顷波，一家音影隔云罗。湘鱼自料非仙骨，楚卒曾闻动夜歌。两地情怀儿女幼，廿年夫婿别离多。谁知老燕辛勤意，争奈重帘不卷问”。
当先生已步入老迈之年，还写出“勤驴道远燕山幕，明月清风正可人”。虽叹人生短暂，却胸怀宏远大志。那孜孜不倦、乐观向上的心态常使后辈愧比不如。今日读之，泪雨满面，更觉先生萋萋在眼前。
今天惠民学兄告知，先生已抛小辈乘鹤仙去。小童难隘悲痛，还望请先生稍作停留，让小童为你唱一首最后的离歌：
黑夜中，这是一座空城，
没有月光，只有暗暗的灯。
有位老人已经沉睡，
伴随他的，有我低吟的歌声。
难忘北京城的黄昏，
中关村里坐着几个人。
一个智贤播下苗和种，

Huimin, thank you for telling us the sad news. I am deeply sadden. I feel sorry upon hearing this news as for many years I had not made effort to visit him. Life is fragile. Time is sometime unkind! I would forever miss him. It was over 20 years ago when i first met Professor Tang. Ever since that time, I have been indebted for his teaching. On my bookshelf, I keep his poem collection he gave me when I left Beijing in 1990. From time to time, I open it, see his photo, and read his poems. His sincerity, his generosity and his keen interest to his students are all I had witnessed and I will forever remember. My condolence goes to his family. I wonder if we as a group should do to pay our respect. I would love to participate.

Prof. Tang passed away at 3:50am in Haidian hospital this morning, at age 83.He was hospitalized on Friday the week before, due topneumonia. At the doctor's suggestion, he was sent to ICUa few days later. According to his younger son, he had recovered quite well, and was scheduled to move back to normal ward today.But his situation suddenly deteriorated in the mid-night.A memorial will be held in BaBaoShan on Friday 25th.
